2017 Camp Ida Improvements
We believe that 2017 has been a great year for Camp Ida. As you may know, the elders of the Mt. Vernon church of Christ assumed the oversight of the camp
from the Redwater church of Christ in February of this year. For 40 years the Redwater congregation oversaw this great work, but saw that it was time
to entrust its care to another group of Christians that could help carry on its great legacy. The elders at Mt. Vernon are committed to seeing that
Camp Ida continues to be a place of fun and enjoyment, but most importantly that it is a place where the Bible is taught to help solidify the faith
of current and future generations. One of the greatest effects of this transition is to ensure that the work begun back in 1976, thanks to the vision
and gift of land by Ida Mae Hamilton, will not cease any time soon, but be able to carry on for many years to come.
With the support of other congregations and individuals lending both financial and physical help, many upgrades were made to the camp this year.
- The pool fence which had been rapidly decaying was first replaced; it now is a metal fence that should last for many years to come.
Additionally the pool was converted to a salt-water system which not only is more pleasant for the swimmers but also lowers the yearly
upkeep and chemical costs.
- The cabins have been converted from open-air to enclosed cabins with heating and air conditioning. This is part of a multi-step process to
make the camp more comfortable for all in the summer, but also promote year-round usage.
- Two new bathhouses were added; both a male and female bathhouse were constructed adjacent to the existing campers bathhouses. This is a nice
luxury for the staff that give up their time to help the camp, but also helps remove questions and liability issues with adults and
children bathing in the same area.
- Most recently, the mess hall has been enclosed with doors and windows in preparation for year-round usage.
We greatly appreciate all of those who have contributed and worked so hard through this year to accomplish these improvements in a short amount of time.
Even with those accomplishments in place, there are still two more major projects that we are hoping to finish before the start of the 2018 camp season, but we
need your help-particularly your financial help.
- Heating and Air Conditioning units for the mess hall. As part of the plan to make Camp Ida usable year-round, we need to install new air
conditioning units in the mess hall. We have received quotes to have two five-ton units installed at an estimated cost of $15,000.
- New staff cabin and country store. Our old staff cabin, which had fallen into disrepair, has now been removed from the property. Plans have
been drawn to construct a new cabin, which will also add restroom facilities and showers, as well as include an area for storage and the
relocation of the country store which was also rapidly aging. This project has an estimated cost of $20,000.
We would certainly appreciate any help that you could offer at this time to help complete these projects. If you would like more information, please do not
hesitate to contact us at the church office or any of the numbers listed below. If you would like to contribute to these projects you may send a check
made out to Camp Ida (see address below) or visit www.CampIda.com and look for the donate tab to use a credit card through Paypal (you do not have to
have an account with Paypal to donate). Camp Ida is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and so contributions are tax-deductible.
Thank you for your consideration.
